How To Thrive As An Adult After Childhood Trauma

As adult thrivers of early childhood traumas, we want to look to see how are we doing in our lives now. K Expert, Lisa Cypers Kamen is an international happiness Expert, a Positive Psychology Coach, Speaker and Author. We are talking about what happens when you go through some kind of trauma, particularly in your formative years that changes your life.

Trauma that changes how we see the world are life interrupting occurrences that change the the way we see the world as children. The security and safety that we’ve been promised by our parents and society are ripped from beneath us and we are left with terrible insecurities, pain, fear, trauma and it does effect the course of our lives.

How do we deal with these issues and how do you know if you are stuck in one of these unhealthy mind sets? Lisa tells us that the great thing about children is that they are very resilient. They move on and are able to construct their lives and not be defined by that story.

What often happens with children of trauma are often not apologized to, so they are left without closure. Sometimes children don’t mention the abuses against them. It’s very important that we share our stories of pain so that we can begin to process some level of closure for yourself. To live a thriving and flourishing life, one needs to communicate what has gone on in some way to restore joy in their life.

When you remove the guilt/shame from a “dirty little secret”, it becomes your pretty little secret that can help heal another. Have you shared your story with someone? Did it help you and them?

It is essential to unburden yourself in some way. Perhaps a Pastor, therapist or peer group can help. Be careful about protecting yourself. Find those safe havens were you can start dialoging and create some sort of safety and community to share the experience.

Chappale Burton, a guest on Kirsty TV went through childhood trauma and abuse which lead him on a journey of forgiveness as he grew into adolescence. He for example, literally started to consider why his offenders hurt him. He understood empathy was a tool he could use to understand forgiveness.
